The world is a stage, and we are all actors

While I’m on the topic of movies and actors, as you know I’ve done some acting myself, and I’ve been handed some good and bad scripts. For a writer or a group of writers, a script often takes a very long time to complete. Some are wonderful. Some are not. Some are just plain bad. With these, you know from first read that no thought went into the writing, and you know that the script isn’t going to succeed as a film. Even very skilled and talented acting cannot mask a poor script, and people will walk out of the theater or shake their heads after the film and ask, “What was that?” If you’re a struggling actor who can’t pick your projects like an A-list actor, you grin and bear it, as they say, you tell yourself it’s the script you’ve been handed, and there may be some piece of it you can use for your reel. Unless the director is open to changing the script, you’re stuck with it.

But it’s your life we’re talking about, and you’re the director. You’re also the writer. And if someone else hands you a lousy script to live, you have the director’s approval to rewrite it. The world is your stage, and you have exclusive rights to choose how your life unfolds upon that stage. If the script you now have in your head is a bad one, rewrite it. Trash the old one and create a new one.

It is critical when you find yourself living a bad script, or any part of one, that you change it. In writing a better one, create a winning character for yourself . . . and a happy ending. Don’t put your life script in the hands of someone else or rely on someone else to write it for you. Write your own and follow it “to a T.” Act the way you think the hero of your story would, and keep acting with confidence and determination. The world really is a stage and we truly are actors. Let’s be the leads in our own stories.
